OUR COURSES

Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS)

2 Day ACLS Provider Course

The ACLS course is aimed at Nurses, Junior Interns, Advanced Life Support (ALS) Paramedics and Medical Practitioners who wish to improve and/or update their advanced management of adult patients in cardiac arrest and post-cardiac arrest and arrhythmia management.

Candidates will be able to apply a systematic and algorithm-based approach to the management of respiratory arrest, ventricular fibrillation and ventricular tachycardia, pulses electrical activity and asystole, stable and unstable tachycardias and bradycardias.

Candidates will be able to identify and treat ischaemic chest pain, expedite the care of acute coronary syndromes and stroke, and provide effective initial care and transfer to reduce disability and death.

ACLS is practical, simulated case-based course that will enhance resuscitation skills in the management of cardiac arrest and peri-arrest patients. Ideal performance is initially demonstrated via video and instructor, learning is facilitated by extensive hands-on practice, with each participant receiving several opportunities to lead their team in simulated clinical scenarios.

The instructor/student ratio per course is 1:8

 

Assessment and Preparation

Participants will receive an American Heart Association ACLS Provider Manual and set of Algorithm Memory Cards are supplied prior to ACLS course participation. Each candidate will receive an American Heart Association ACLS Card upon successful completion of the course which is valid for two years.

 

Accreditation

Accredited by American Heart Association (AHA). In addition to 28 Continuing Education Units and 2 Medical Ethics via the HPCSA.

 

Prerequisite: Current Basic Life Support for Healthcare Provider’s Certificate.

 

Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support Refresher (ACLSR)

1 Day ACLS Refresher Course

The ACLS Refresher course is aimed at candidates that have attended the ACLS Provider course who are looking to renew their certification.

It is recommended that candidates who are renewing their certificate be actively working in the field of emergency medicine (such as prehospital care, Emergency Department or ICU)

 

Requirements

Candidates must have a valid ACLS Certificate and be in personal possession of the current ACLS Manual.

 

Accreditation

Accredited by American Heart Association (AHA). In addition to 22 Continuing Education Units via the HPCSA.

 

Basic Life Support For Healthcare Providers (BLS for HCP)

5½ – Hour BLS for Healthcare Provider Course

This course is aimed at the healthcare professional who needs to perform the initial steps of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) in victims of all ages, basic airway manoeuvres and rescue breathing with and without adjuncts; candidates will be proficient in the use of bag-valve resuscitators and in the technique of automated external defibrillation.

Participants will be able to demonstrate how to manage choking in conscious and unconscious adults, children, infants, and be aware of special considerations such as scene and rescuer safety, standard precautions, head, neck and spinal injuries and the recovery position.

The course is taught in a relaxed, video-based practice-while-watching interactive adult learning environment. The focus is on active participation with ample opportunity to practice and apply these skills in simulated scenarios.

The instructor/student ratio per course is 1:9

 

Assessment and Preparation

Participants will receive an American Heart Association BLS for Healthcare Providers Manual. Each candidate will receive an American Heart Association BLS for Healthcare Providers Certificate upon successful completion of the course which is valid for two years.

 

Accreditation

Accredited by American Heart Association (AHA). In addition to 14 Continuing Education Units and 1 BLS Ethics via the HPCSA.

 

Please note: This course is a pre-requisite for the ACLS ® and PALS ® courses.

 

Basic Life Support Instructor

2 Day BLS Instructor Course

The Basic Life Support (BLS) Instructor Course is designed to prepare BLS instructors to disseminate the science, skills and philosophy of resuscitation programs to participants enrolled in BLS & Heart saver Courses.

The American Heart Association Instructor Course is video-intensive and CD directed. It provides a model of the behaviours that each module teaches; the course is highly interactive, requiring candidates to make decisions, engage in dialogue and reflect on what constitutes quality instruction; the course takes at least 8-hours to complete.

The Discipline Specific Module Course (DSM) is a full day learning experience facilitated by a BLS Faculty Member. The Basic Life Support for Healthcare Provider course is a prerequisite for this course and provides many opportunities for application and practice of instruction, skills teaching and assessment.

Within three months of attending the DSM course, the instructor candidate must independently organise and present an American Heart Association Course during which he/she will be monitored by the BLS Faculty Member to audit performance, knowledge and skills.

After successful monitoring, the instructor candidate is registered with the Resuscitation Council of Southern Africa as a BLS and/or Heart saver Instructor, capable of teaching American Heart Association & Resuscitation Council CPR and Basic Life Support Courses

Pre-entry requirements:

  • Instructor candidates must hold a valid AHA BLS for Healthcare Provider Certificate
  • Instructor candidates must be linked to a recognised Basic Life Support Training Centre
  • Instructor candidates must achieve at least 84% on the written examination
  • Instructor candidates must be monitored within 6 months of the Instructor Course
  • Instructor candidates must be prepared to attend a formal update, and/or be re-monitored every two years
 

ECG and Pharmacology

1 Day ECG and Pharmacology Course

The Basic ECG and Pharmacology Course provides a systematic approach to the recognition and emergency management of bradycardias, tachycardias, supraventricular and ventricular arrhythmias, atrioventricular blocks, pacing, pacemakers and synchronised cardioversion.

The Course is designed for all healthcare professionals whose responsibilities require them to recognise and interpret life-threatening arrhythmias and ECG rhythms and to provide initial emergency care and appropriate pharmacological interventions.

The courses teach the knowledge required to identify and stabilise adult patients presenting with a variety of electrocardiographic abnormalities, together with the clinical and applied pharmacology relevant to cardiovascular emergencies. Numerous clinical examples and illustrations are provided to participants.

The instructor/student ratio per course is 1:16

 

Assessment and Preparation

Participants will receive the American Heart Association ECG and Pharmacology student workbook beforehand, and must be studied prior to course participation; each candidate will receive an American Heart Association ECG and Pharmacology certificate upon completion.

 

Accreditation

Accredited by American Heart Association (AHA). In addition to 9 Continuing Education Units via the HPCSA.

 

International Trauma Life Support (ITLS)

2 Day ITLS Course

ITLS courses are designed for providers who are first to evaluate and stabilise the trauma patient.The course provides complete training in the skills needed for rapid assessment, resuscitation, stabilisation and transportation of trauma patients.

The course is intended for participants who provide critical care in the pre-hospital and emergency department settings, 1st responders, EMT’s, Paramedic and Nurses.

DESCRIPTION

The ITLS course provides the core of knowledge and skills appropriate for all levels of EMS personnel, including EMT-B’s, First responders and other technicians.

ITLS Advanced course builds on this knowledge, emphasising evaluation steps and sequencing as well as techniques for resuscitating and packaging patients.

HANDS-ON STATIONS INCLUDE:

  • Patient assessment and management
  • Basic and advanced airway management
  • Needle chest decompression and fluid resuscitation
  • Spinal motion restriction – rapid extrication, short backboard, helmet management, rug roll and long back board/scoop stretcher utilisation
  • Extremity immobilisation and traction splint application

The instructor/student ratio per course is 1:8

Assessment & Preparation:

Course applicants will receive a manual for pre-study purposes each candidate will receive an ITLS ® certificate valid for three years.

Accreditation:

Endorsed by the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) and the National Association of EMS Physicians (NAEMSP). In addition to 23 Continuing Education Units and 1 Medical Ethics via the HPCSA.

Paediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)

2 Day PALS Provider Course

The PALS course is aimed at Nurses, Junior Interns, Advanced Life Support (ALS) Paramedics and Medical Practitioners involved in Paediatric emergencies; candidates will be able to perform a systematic approach to the assessment of a seriously ill or injured child, recognize and manage a child in respiratory distress and failure, compensated and hypotensive shock.

Participants will be able to recognise and manage a child with a life-threatening bradyarrhythmia, tachyarrhythmia or arrest rhythm, and prevent further deterioration during stabilisation and transfer.

Candidates will be able to perform effective respiratory management skills, including the use of oxygen delivery devices, ventilation and intubation, as well as the appropriate use of electrical therapy, including defibrillation and synchronised cardioversion, IV access techniques including intra-osseous and fluid bolus administration.

PALS is a practical, case-based course that will enhance one’s skills in the evaluation and management of an infant or child with respiratory compromise, circulatory compromise or cardiac arrest. Ideal performance is initially demonstrated via video and Instructor.

Learning is facilitated by extensive hands-on practice, with each participant receiving several opportunities to lead their team in simulated clinical scenarios, guided by positive and constructive feedback.

The instructor/student ratio per course is 1:8

 

Assessments & Preparations:

Participants will receive an American Heart Association PALS provider Manual and Algorithm Memory Card, prior to PALS Course participation. Participants must be in possession of an American Heart Association BLS for Healthcare Provider Certificate.

Candidates will receive an American Heart Association Paediatric Advanced Life Support Card and Certificate upon successful completion which is valid for two years.

 

Accreditation:

Accredited by American Heart Association (AHA). In addition to 29 Continuing Education Units and 1 Medical Ethics via the HPCSA.

Prerequisite: Current Basic Life Support for Healthcare Provider’s Certificate.
